“They generally knew the socio-economic status of the woman they were proposing to and so could reasonably judge what the woman’s response to their proposal would be.” A suitor knew what the girl’s response would be because he had previously arranged the terms of her sale with her father, who was responsible for beating her until she agreed to marry the suitor (whom she may have never met before) when he called on her to propose. Marriage for mutual love is a recent experiment, and the divorce rate shows it isn’t working out very well.
